Prospecting...

It was as if by Chance, just as when me and Rene were about to leave the studio to go our separate ways, Dominic (prospect guitarist for SPK) showed up... he was to suppose to have a practice with his band and luckily for us, their drummer was coming in late... So we wasted no time and tried him out... jammed a few bars of this and that song and after a few minutes, both me and Rene were convinced that he could be a shoe-in for that guitarist spot... Anyways, i don't want to sound cynical but it has always been tiring for us to expect a lot from this prospecting thing but the opportunity just presented itself to us... maybe this is it... Hopefully this is it...

Missed...

Missed a chance at trying out someone for that SPK Guitarist post... I'm not sure whether put the blame on that guy for not replying at the soonest possible time or for me to have turned off my cellphone while watching a movie last night...

Anyways, there will always be another time, but time flies so fast nowadays that in just a few blinks we'll be ending this 2011 and will be welcoming 2012... i just hope that 2012 won't be the last year of our insanely bitter-sweet existence...

After Three Tries..

I feel like posting again so here it goes...

it's been a while since my last post... back then it was Me, Carissa, Mar, Joms and Josh...

Since the time of my last post, Joms left, Rene came back and Mar had to say goodbye... Then we went quiet...

For the last month until the present it's been Me, Carissa, Joms, Rene and Josh... At the start, it did look quite promising but after three gigs, we're still stuck with just being able to play six songs and with each gig turning out to be let-downs specially the last one we had 2 weeks ago prompting me not to play during last Tuesday's Buzz Night...

Now I'm not sure as to what i should do... it's really hard to decide since options are very scarce...

I'm getting really frustrated although i haven't really placed my butt on it... Maybe next week when my personal smoke-stacked life clears, I'll have a go at some options hoping to get better results...

I really miss those days when everything's just...

Last Night's Gig...

Hello everyone...

i was really happy that i decided to push thru with SPK last night inspite of the fact that it was a last minute thing and Carissa wasn't around to sing for us...

it wasn't the nices of sets, in fact we were really messing up things specially Mar who was really drunk getting me annoyed at first but, the hell with perfection... i just wanted to play a gig with my Soft Pillow Kisses band mates before i leave for the U.S...

It has really been frustrating for me realising that, as of the moment, Soft Pillow Kisses isn't really a complete unit, lacking a permanent bassist and having a guitarist who could anytime leave the band... Just wish things would go back to normal again. I wish i could keep this band intact for a longer period of time... It ain't easy really keeping a band like this alive... People just come and go due to priorities far greater than just being in a group that makes no money at all... only a fraction of the music population get to appreciate you and most of the time, you play infront of empty venues... i just wish i could have like-minded people play in this band again but i do know how like-minded people think (most of them anyway)... that's why i content myself with anyone who just wants to...

Going back to last night's gig... it wasn't buzz night since only Candyaudioline qualifies as the other "indie" band present but it was still quite enjoyable... as always, can't really avoid picking up on other bands short comings interms of my (and Rene's) standards... but there's really more to this than just taste... the feeling of being just another band in the line up is really cool... makes me miss playing infront of people who don't have a clue as to what we are and what we do... aslo i did get to appreciate again other people's music...

Chatting with Rene was really refreshing... It's like getting my batteries charged... in fact, i just realised that none of my bandmates except for Dennis are really into this indie stuff...

Just a few hours to go before we leave for the U.S.. i'll sure miss SPK (and Candyaudioline) for 3 weeks... just hope that when i get back, we get to practice more and finish the new songs and play some gigs even as this present set up or hopefully as a permanent troupe...

The Present...

Hello Everyone...

just want to write about the present status of Soft Pillow Kisses...

as of late, Soft Pillow Kisses is composed of Me on Guitars and Vocals, Carissa on Vocals, Mar still on Guitars and Josh on Drums... Former Pillow bassist Rene have been sessioning for us every now and then. Rene is now, officially playing bass for one of my favourite local acts Populardays... don't really know if i'll be looking for a new bassist as of the moment, i'm quite content with this present set up...

recently, i've been mixing some of our recent recordings often times coming out a bit disappointed... either an out of tune guitar or wrong drum-fills are to blame... had to stop there and decide what to do some other time...

We do have a gig tonight but i doubt if we can play because Carissa can't make it and Mar's phone has been off since yesterday...

i'll be leaving for the U.S. this thurday... be back in 3 weeks... see what i can do once i get back...

Hello everyone...

we are again in the middle of another personnel crisis with Joms (Bassist) un-officially quitting and Mar (Guitarist) expected to leave the country in less than a month's time...

haven't really thought of what to do since i've been concentrating on Candyaudioline's recording as of late... athough i do have an option for a guitarist which i think will be Dennis (Candyaudioline) again... for the Bassist position, i'm a bit undecided as to how should i deal with the situation... my first option is to get someone from another band that plays Buzz Night... or i could look for someone who isn't from the scene... i could also ask Rene (Ex-Pillow Bassist) if is still interested in Playing Bass for Pillow...

don't want to think about it now but it keeps creeping into me evry once in a while... hopefully i could get things to start rolling again in a few weeks time...

Just A Thought...

hello everyone...

been receiving a few positive praises from people outside the country lately... its really heart warming... how i wish i could play in those places where people like what we do...

at times i keep day dreaming of going to places such as the US, parts of Europe like, Greece, Spain, Sweden, the UK... Or going to neighboring Asian countries such as Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and Korea... Just the though of playing outside the country fill my Heart with Joy...

if only i had lots of money... i'd bring my bandmates along and play anywhere or even everywhere... i've been to lots of places and watched numerous gigs by countless indie bands and i really like the crowd... i remeber watching The Radio Dept. at Singapore last year... even though Radio Dept. was a bit off, the crown was really accommodating... Same during Bell And Sebastian gig there... The big crown during The Cure's Hong Kong Gig 2 years ago was really so behaved... 2 years ago, i watched Asobi Seksu in Seattle the crowd was really cool... the band too was really friendly... i even offered them my sevices as a roadie but the Guitarist shyly replied telling me that don't have money to pay me...

Maybe someday i'll get to experience such but i'm not really pinning my hopes... but we can never tell... til' the next post...

Practice Practice...

hello Everyone...

As i've said in my last post, i'll start focusing again on Soft Pillow Kisses... and the best way to start is to organize a practice session... that's what i did and at last, we were able to have a somewhat decent practice last night although it was a bit short-lived because our singer wasn't available (again) then i got tired early on and my two other bands were lined-up too... still it was a very fun experience...

it's been more than three weeks already since the last time we played together... i guess me and my bandmates are starting to gel together although at times i still lose my patience at Mar (guitarist) but i can't do anything about it anymore... just have to stick it out with him for now... at least he's trying his best and for me, that's good enough... i just wish that we could practice frequentky but with Josh have a somewhat steady job already, that would not be very easy...

there's not much left for us to do but to make worth of everytime we're together and when we can be together...

A Bit Confused At The Moment...

Hello everyone...

i've been very busy with lamenting on Candyaudiolines sad situation and also with a new project of mine called "Lipstick Tragedy"...

but since i've already been used to lamenting on Candyaudioline's "Perpetual Sad Condition" and have come to terms with the truth to the stupidity of forming a band devoted to the lagacy of Glitter Rock, i'm deciding to give a bit of my time again to Soft Pillow Kisses...

we were suppose to practice last Sunday but Josh was under the weather and i was not really in the mood to practice... actually, we haven't done any serious practice for the past few weeks... i've already laid down two new tunes for SPK but it seems that i'm not really sure about both tunes... i can't even come out with words or even a decent melody for either one... I guess the Lipstick Tragedy thing has tragically drained me... or maybe i'm just pushing my self a bit too much... i'm trying to recall what was i in when i wrote most of the best SPK tunes but i can't hardly remember save for the fact that most of the time i was under the Mystifying Spell of Sadness... Currently i'm sad for a lot of reasons but such could not inspire me to produce lines like "through the shattered glass we steal, memories that hit you..." or come up with tunes that can equal the like of "I Was Right" or "Wasting Opporyunities"... Now i'm confused...

Well it's still far from 2012... there's dtill a lot of time to try an come up with decent songs...

Flattered And Flattened...

Hello everyone...

If you've noticed my recent posts, most are quotes from the net pertaining to Soft Pillow Kisses...

It's very flattering, really, to read so many praises coming from people from different parts of the globe... i never really expected these... somehow it makes me feel slightly relieved given our present condition right now... Well it's nothing new... it's always been full of "little ups" and "tormenting downs" for us...

Actually, were doing fine as of now but i'm really having a hard time with the new songs that i've written... Admittedly, we're somewhat short on the "Skills" department right now... the guitars in particular but i can sense the effort and somehow, there's consulation somewhere... but it's the presence factor that's killing us... how i wish that i was really very rich and that i'd hire my bandmates or just simply put out a non-income generating corporation aimed at nothing whatsoever and just make them my staffs so that there'll be no conflicting sched between each and everyone of us... But such would be really venturing very far from what's real ain't it...

i just have to deal with reality...

No I don't want that to happen, I don't know what to say," Not really certain with the lyrics but there's the thought. By the way, SPK is a pinoy indie band for those who don't know. They have the international caliber compared to the mainstreamers, of course you know who I'm referring to.

it was quite a long one... the wait and anticipation was always the order of things and when it hit, it didn't really shook things up... but still it made us smile every now and then...

Hello Everyone...

Played Buzz Night a few Days ago... Like the Bistro Gig we had recently, not really the typical heads-up performance... maybe because i was so tired that day coming from a 12 hour work-thing and my amp wasn't working well... also i was having a hard time familiarizing myself with my one year old white jazzmaster...

Mar was slightly doing well, so was Carissa who's voice i could surprisinly hear even with my guitar turned up way too high for Pillow atandars...Josh too was in his typical lazy-self... two bassists played for us that night... Ex-Pillow Bassist Lara who's been here for over a week now from from her U.S. stint played two songs and current bassist Joms played the remaining 4 songs...



Hopefully another gig and a few more practices then we'll be in the right form again... hhmmmm, i'm thinking of getting us a keyboard player again...

1st Gig For 2011 @ 70's Bistro...

hello everyone,

we were able to play our first gig for this year at 70's bistro... not the usual feel good gig but still it was something to hold dear to... not only was it our first gig for this year but also the first one with this present line-up all showing up... i guess the last time this new line up of Pillow performed with all members present was September of last year...

we'll be playing again this thursday at Buzz Night... hopefully this time around, we'll be able to play more comfortably and confidently... can't wait to finish the new song, but i think i'll be having a hard time with this one...



... also another first is that the night before this gig, my band mates were able to organise a practice session with out me being around... i'm very pleased with that... hopefully one day they'll be able to play a decent gig in my absence...

Two Practice Sessions And A New Tune...

Hello Everyone...

at last we ere able to have practice last Sunday and about 2 days ago... as usual, someone was late and it was me... i fell a sleep while waiting to leave the house at around 9pm... anyways, when i got to the studio, everyone was there...

not wanting to waste this opportunity, we started to play old songs... obviously, everyone was rusty but as we moved on from one song to the next we got more comfortable and easily got to remember our parts once more... after almost 2 1?2 hours of playing, we got tired and decided to call it a day...



Next practice came two days later but this time our singer didn't show up... got a bit frustrated and wasn't up to practicing but i wanted to try a tune that i have which was supped to be a Candyaudioline tune... as i was expecting, it was more of a Pillow tune than a Candy item so i decided to pass it on to Pillow... no lyrics let and as of that session, it was still very sketchy... hopefully, by next practice we'd get to improve on it and hopefully it'll come out close to what i'm expecting it to be...

A Long Plane Ride...

Hello everyone...

i'm in Cebu right now and i just can't help feeling nostalgic about a gig here that Soft Pillow Kisses took part in almost 10 years ago...

actually, i was listening to mostly SPK songs while in flight and it was really a feel good thing... Stolen Flowers, Harsh Words, So-Called Friend, Bean Bag, Bathing In The Sun were just some of the songs in the mix... the last 4 was released here as a 5 song casette e.p. called "As You Whisper In My Ear"...

we were still purely indiepop then but nowadays, we've become noisier and a bit new wave-ish... still there's that "gentle-ness factor" in the newer songs that prevents these songs from straying away from what this band have been known for...

listening to newer songs such at The Louder You'll Know, Like Rainbows Do, Lying To Ourselves, Yet It's Been A While and On A Sunday made me ask myself questions like, did we progress? are we still up there with the best of them? did we hit a brick wall?

it's not that i'm not confident with these songs but i am really looking forward to write something far better than It Will Never Last Forever or Just Like The Sky or I Don't Know What To Say...

comparing SPK to my other band Candyaudioline who of which has just recently morphed into into something really mind boggling :)... SPK seems to be just coasting along familiar waters so to speak... maybe it has something to do with age i guess... compared to Candy, Pillow has always been a young band... most members don't last more than 2 or 3 years... with Candy there's Dennis and Arjay who's been with me since 2005 and 2006...

... the last 2 songs that i listened to while we were approaching Cebu was Losing Something and Yet It's Been A While... there's nothing really significant about it but listening to them on the way down made me feel so high... :)

i miss playing Pillow Songs... can't wait to have practice sometime soon...

maybe this weekend, i guess everyone's ready... still waiting...

Looking Forward...

Hello Everyone...

looking back at the year that was, i noticed one really significant thing... i became too pre-occupied with Candyaudioline as far writing songs is concerned...

Talking with Josh a few days ago and Listening to some of our songs made me think that i should at least put equal emphasis on both... i was able to write almost 8 of the 9 new songs of Candyaudioline while for Pillow i was only able to manage 2 and the 2 other new songs we recorded this year were old songs re-arranged...

also, the recording sessions were all done with very little preparation... maybe i was just rushing things last year and was a bit in limbo with what Soft Pillow Kisses were turning into... i was gearing towards a "new wave-ish" sonund... i never really took into account that Soft Pillow Kisses took in 3 new recruits... also our singer was most of the time "not around" forcing us to play gigs with session singers (mostly Ex-Pillow Singers)... well i still do plan to sound new wave-ish specially now that we have a guitarist who's willing to play with just a few necessary stomp boxes...

also i failed to take into account that i have one of the best drummer bassist combinations with which i should've taken advantage a long time ago, to at least bring out the best in some of the older songs we seldom play due to the inability of former members specially the drummer, to decently execute them... our singer too, even with out the benefit of practice is able to sing decently during abrubtly called gigs...

now i do have something to look forward too again but i'll try my best to avoid doing things in a rush... patience will be my word of the month for now... 'til the next post again...
